Dogs at Les Rossignols

Dog-Friendly FAQ

Are dogs welcome at the gîte?

Yes. We are a genuinely dog-friendly gîte in rural France and welcome well-behaved dogs as part of the family.

As dog owners ourselves, we understand just how important your pets are and how essential it is to find a place where they are truly welcome.

Is the garden fully enclosed?

Yes. The garden is fully enclosed on all sides and has been designed to be as dog-proof as possible. Fencing is a combination of hedges reinforced with wire stock fencing, solid wooden fences, and walls, with heights ranging from approximately 1.6 metres to over 2 metres.

Can dogs be left safely in the garden?

The enclosed garden provides a safe and secure space. However, as with any unfamiliar environment, we recommend supervising your dog, particularly if they are very agile or prone to jumping or digging.

Are dogs allowed inside the house?

Yes. Dogs are welcome in all rooms, and the house has tiled floors throughout, making it practical as well as comfortable for dog owners.

Are dogs allowed on the furniture or beds?

We provide throws and covers for sofas and chairs. Dogs may not sleep on the beds unless this has been agreed in advance and you bring all of your own bedding.

What dog equipment is provided?

We supply:

  • Dog bowls

  • Dog towels

  • Throws and furniture covers

  • Poo bags and a dedicated waste bin

  • A doggy paddling pool

Are there dog walks nearby?

Absolutely. There are excellent dog walks straight from the door, including quiet country lanes and off-road footpaths. A folder of recommended walks and maps is provided in the cottage.

Is the area safe for dogs?

Yes. The gîte is located in a small, quiet hamlet with very little traffic, making it a calm and safe environment for dogs.

Are there dog-friendly attractions nearby?

Yes. Several local attractions welcome dogs:

  • Château de Sarzay – dogs allowed inside the castle as well as in the grounds

  • George Sand’s house at Nohant – dogs welcome in the grounds

  • Château d’Ainay-le-Vieil – dogs welcome in the gardens.

  • Zoo Parc Beauval - dogs are welcome in most areas of the zoo except the indoor exhibits, the cable car and the wolf enclosure. We visited with our golden retrievers, the highlight of our day was the free-flight bird display.

Are there dog-friendly lakes nearby?

Yes, there are several nearby lakes that are ideal for walking with dogs:

  • Étang Merlin (Châteaumeillant) – a fishing lake, perfect for walks and picnics but not suitable for swimming

  • Étang de la Courzette (Maisonnais) – also a fishing lake, ideal for walking with dogs and picnics but not for swimming

  • Lac de Sidiailles – excellent for walking; dogs are allowed to swim, but not on the main beach during high season

Is there a local vet nearby?

Yes. There is a friendly veterinary practice in Châteaumeillant, which we use for our own pets. They are experienced in issuing Animal Health Certificates for your return to the UK.

Do you charge extra for dogs?

No. There is no extra charge for dogs.

How many dogs can we bring?

We do not have a limit on numbers, but please contact us in advance to discuss numbers, sizes, and breeds so we can ensure the gîte is suitable for everyone’s comfort.

Is this gîte suitable for large or energetic dogs?

In most cases, yes. The enclosed garden, quiet location, and excellent local walks make it suitable for larger or active breeds. If you have a particularly agile or strong dog, feel free to contact us for reassurance.
